The oldest mention of De Gelderse Toren dates back to 1535, when Duke Charles of Gelre, Count of Zutphen, made plans to build this tower. It is believed that an earlier tower already stood at this location, whose foundations date back to the 13th century. In 1535, the watchtower transformed into an imposing round residential tower, intended for both habitation and defence. A historical moment of note is 22 February 1624, when the tower was plundered by Spanish troops led by Count Hendrik van den Bergh.
