We can rightly call Eerbeek the paper village of the Veluwe - why? We'd like to explain that to you below.
Because when you know what you see, you suddenly see Eerbeek through the glasses of 400 years of papermaking!
The Veluwe region
For the basis for the landscape of the Veluwe as we know it today, we have to go (very) far back. To the last ice age to be precise. Two large ice masses slid over this area from the north. At the edges of these ice masses, the ground was pushed up. This is how the difference in height on the Veluwe was created. You can still see this clearly at the Veluwezoom National Park, which lies next to Eerbeek. When it got warmer and the ice melted, this had an abrasive effect. That's why the outskirts of the municipality of Brummen - the IJsselvallei- are flat.
Water provided energy
What remained underground was the largest water supply in the Netherlands. This was cleverly exploited in the 17th century. At so-called spreng heads on the edges of the Veluwe, water bubbled up and flowed down the Veluwe due to the difference in height. With a system of brooks and springs, the water was led to water mills. This created early forms of industry and economy. Kings and industrialisation
The royal influences from Paleis Het Loo on this early economy are also still visible in Eerbeek. Commissioned by King Willem I, the Apeldoorns Kanaal was built for transport by water with draft horses and flat-bottomed boats (flat-bottomed ship). During the industrialisation period, water mills grew into factories. Eerbeek grew along with them because more staff were needed and they needed housing. King Willem III started building the railway for transport by steam train. Thus, the canal slowly became redundant. Board the Veluwsche Stoomtrein Maatschappij and travel back in time!
