Experience Brummen from the water! From the renovated canoe landing stage near the Hallse brug, you can step straight into your canoe, kayak or onto your SUP board. You can also hire pedal boats or canoes from Restaurant De Brugkabouter. Great fun for families with children. And ideal because the Apeldoorns Kanaal is not navigated and is sheltered. So you can fully enjoy the historic setting of the Apeldoorns Kanaal!
The Apeldoorn Canal
The Apeldoorns Canal has played an important role in the development of this area. The canal is 55 kilometres long and runs from Hattem to Dieren right along the Veluwe flank where, in the late 18th century, there were about 200 water mills powered by Veluwe stream water. The canal was dug parallel to the Grift, an ancient waterway that was navigated by flatboats. In some places along the canal, you can still see the Grift running. In 1825, construction of the Hattem - Apeldoorn section started from Paleis Het Loo by order of King Willem I. This made shipping possible. In 1858, the southern section between Apeldoorn and Dieren was started so that through waterways could be created. The rise of the steam train and road traffic reduced the importance of shipping on the canal. Still, the canal cannot be thought away from the landscape!

For a fun day on the water of the Apeldoorns Kanaal, pedal boats and kayaks are available for rent at Restaurant De Brugkabouter. Enjoy the peace and quiet on the water while paddling at your own pace. There is also a brand new fishing jetty to cast out your fishing rod from.
