Engelenburg Castle

Presumably, Engelenburg House was founded by the influential official Schimmelpenninck van der Oye family, who owned land in Brummen as early as the 15th century. The original house was an undercrofted L-shaped building, which was destroyed by Spanish troops in 1624. A new house was built with a square tower, which was remodelled in the 18th century by order of Robert Jasper van der Capellen (1743-1814). A staircase with carvings and a stucco ceiling were added to the interior. In 1828, Judith van Walree-van Lennep had the house rebuilt in neo-classical style. The facades were plastered white and the main wing was given a portico with four Ionic columns. At the same time, a landscaped park was laid out to a design by H. van Lunteren. However, the widow soon found the house too large and had Klein Engelenburg built in 1835 to live there. The new owner, the Metelerkamp family, built an orangery on the south side of the forecourt (design: S.A. van Lunteren). A flower garden was laid out at the beginning of the 20th century to the design of L.A. Springer. After World War II, the house came into the ownership of Brummen municipality, which sold it on as early as 1947 to the Twentsche Bank, which turned it into a holiday resort. Since 1987, Engelenburg was owned by the De Lange family, who turned it into a hotel-restaurant. Since 2023, the castle has been part of the EHM Group.

Engelenburg Castle has a 9-hole golf course, 41 hotel rooms and suites, a gourmet restaurant and excellent meeting facilities.
