The Wildbaan in Leuvenheim is not only a beautiful nature reserve in the municipality of Brummen, Gelderland, but also carries with it a rich history. The area, known for its natural beauty and biodiversity, has a fascinating background.

Historical background

The origins of De Wildbaan can be traced back to around 1500. It was during this period that the first structures were erected, but due to walls that were too weak, it had to be completely rebuilt in 1910. The first residents of the area were jonkheer Karel van Gelre and Count Herman Otto van Limburg Stirum, figures of distinction who shaped the history of De Wildbaan.

A remarkable turn in the history of De Wildbaan took place in 1667, when Gerhard Casijn van der Hell, then mayor of Arnhem, acquired the property. He chose to call himself "Van der Hell yoy de Wiltbaen", a name that underlines the connection to the area and which still resonates in stories about the region today.

The Wild Lane today

Today, De Wildbaan is known as an area where nature and history come together. The landscape, with its varied forests, open fields and babbling brooks, is a haven for both people and animals. Management aims to preserve this natural wealth and ensure biodiversity, while also serving as a place for recreational activities.

In an effort to connect the historical value of De Wildbaan with contemporary needs, efforts are underway to turn the area into a 'living asset'. This concept focuses on creating a living estate that encompasses several pillars within elderly care. The aim is to provide an environment that supports both the physical and mental health of its residents, integrating the area's rich history with the care and well-being of the elderly.

De Wildbaan in Leuvenheim embodies a unique combination of natural beauty, historical significance and social responsibility. It is a place where past, present and future come together, offering an inspiring example of how nature and heritage can contribute to the well-being of the community.
